Coronavirus: Kindness during COVID-19

While we hear of discrimination particularly against healthcare workers and Asians, these are unfortunately and obviously due to the restrictions people are experiencing at this time.

It’s a mental health thing – that even domestic violence has gone up. Still, a pandemic or having a lockdown is no reason to speak ill or do wrong to others – but instead, help each other more.

Let’s see some ways we can get kindness into action.

Organized Donations. This is the most common thing for those who wishes to help would do, solicit financial contributions – in person or online. While this method would certainly help, there should be targeted recipients for this to make it more worthwhile or effective. It can not simply be for the general public, like, this donation is for all poor families. Instead, it should be the proceeds of this effort, for example, would go to all the unemployed of XXX city – or the struggling employees of YYY company. Something like that.

Crowdfunding should work especially in times of COVID-19. We are human, after all.

Why?

ONE. Simply classifying poor families from not could miss out aid for those who are actually struggling but not classified as poor. This classification could happen because their ‘irregular’ income was overlooked – that they struggled more when the pandemic happened. TWO. Some ‘groups’ or areas could be more favored by organizers, therefore, favored groups could be given more aid instead of those who needs it more. THREE. Those who could actually contribute much more would just dip their conscience in a pool of little donors by giving breadcrumbs. The rich and the elites should have a different ‘donation box’ as in a separate organization receiving their donations to see who ‘really wants to help’ as per their net worth. After a cut off, only then would these contributions be divided among the recipients.

Food Packs. Another common way to help during COVID-19 would be through food packs. Problem with this one though is that you would need a lot of help in packing, carrying and transporting the food. And if these are cooked meals, then you only help in one serving. Now, while canned food and other staples are good, you should watch out for possible dishonest volunteers or officials who could pocket some of the goods which could reduce the allotted pack for donation.

Food aid for now – livelihood after the pandemic.

Sheltering the Homeless. We do not really hear many who does this. As even when COVID-19 was still nonexistent, the homeless was generally ignored – even by governments. But we are in the time of a pandemic and leaving the homeless on the streets would only make matters worse.

While there are business owners who took action in using their kiosks to shelter the homeless, terminals could be a better option for the fact that travel is still restricted. Not to mention the cleaning facilities it has and the number of people it could accommodate.

Giving Alms. Just like sheltering the homeless, sadly, beggars are ignored by most – and that some governments even have an anti-mendicancy law. It’s like being poor is a crime!?

Okay, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life – then why not give them livelihood? Give short, practical training then give them jobs. Easier said than done? No. Governments and the rich just find it too much work. Okay, there are already NGOs for this, then again, there’s a pandemic that ‘begging’ only showed that donations and support are still lacking.

Check on your friends, relatives and connections. This is as easy as giving a phone call or sending a text message – or even emailing the people you know. Especially since we are in lockdowns, many could be stressed due to financial problems. Ask how they are holding up. Offer them help – whether money, a remote job or a referral.

Do not worry about a reduction in your own cash flow. Remember, what goes around comes around.

Debt relief or Grace period. Even institutions are offering this, how much more between individuals? In fact, there are even laws to this that governments have at this time, like, extended deadlines on house rentals.

One can not just pressure someone who owes him to pay since everyone is on the same boat. We are on lockdown. You can not just say you need the money because you are also being pressured to pay. That’s insensitive. And if you evict him because he owes you, that’s inhumane.

At this time, the only expenditure most households have is just on food. No tuition fees to even worry of since there are no classes. Besides, not everyone even spends on gas to run errands but many just walks. Meanwhile, for areas who just eased their lockdowns, would workers get paid immediately upon returning? No. So pressuring those who owes you when they are still struggling is inconsiderate.

If you worry about your cash flow, then do not indulge in your food. Cut costs. Do not live on pre-lockdown meals. Learn to adjust. It’s part of life.

The world has enough for everyone. Learn to coexist. Be helpful rather than insensitive.

Neighborly Help. Even the Holy Scriptures says so, “Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family, and do not go to your relative’s house when disaster strikes you — better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away.”

This is true whatever religious sect one may belong to. Better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away as immediate help could be given. And so, be that good neighbor. Do not hold grudges. Do not even listen to rumors about you, but only when it comes from talking face-to-face with the rumor-mongerer himself. Dislikes and misunderstandings are normally just the result of lack of communication.

At the end of the day, be sincerely helpful and considerate even after this pandemic. Remember, there is a God and there is what we call ‘karma’.

Coronavirus: Surviving Lack amidst COVID-19

Lack, what lack? Ventilators? PPEs? Face masks? No. These are obvious pandemic necessities that’s being toilfully addressed by governments. Despite the lack of coordination.

Then what lack?

Financial aid. At least for people who have not received such assistance yet. Those who lost their jobs or who are unemployed. Those who are worrying where to get their next meal.

If you do not belong to the hungry, then this article is not for you; unless you got conscience or you want to be a leader. A real one who is not concerned about publicity or whatever gains – but about his fellow man. One who knows that this is not the time to pressure those who are struggling, or to aggressively ask them to pay for whatever they owe you. One who understands that we all need to eat to survive. One who comprehends that those who are struggling are just victims of circumstances – and so he shows sympathy and helps in whatever way he can.

How to survive lack amidst COVID-19

If you are poor to begin with, then financial aids at this time is already a blessing. What with governments or entities neglecting your needs and blaming your lack of education, no family planning or “poor-man’s” mentality all this time – when, in fact, they benefit from you.

You would only know what it is to be hungry when you experience hunger yourself. That’s how you become empathetic.

Though it has basis, government focus should be on uplifting the poor through livelihoods and giving opportunities – not blaming, which may only apply once you were given legitimate opportunities. Same goes with the rich or those with no real money problems. Help. Don’t you even feel guilty that while you eat the best food, someone’s stomach is rumbling in hunger?

And it’s not just in places you know.

If you are simply a victim of circumstances, then financial aids are certainly a relief from the pressures of life. Especially if you are unfortunate to be surrounded by insensitive people while waiting for your financial assistance. And so, here are some things you can do…

  • Use your savings. This is very evident. But as we know, if you do not have work, then your savings could dwindle to the last penny.
  • Stretch your budget. It’s a lockdown. If you are living on limited resources, then cutting your expenses on non-essentials or any kind of indulgence is crucial. Even on food. Trying to live on pre-lockdown conditions is indulgence.
  • Check out on those who owe you or those who could give you a hand. After all, not everyone in these extreme circumstances are cash-strapped. So first, try collecting from those who owe you, if they are struggling as well, then try approaching a relative or borrowing from a friend. If they are in a similar situation, then…
  • Generate cash. For one, you could sell things you do not need or that are hardly used. Another one could be offering your services where ‘social distancing’ is applicable.
  • Get online gigs. Other than many remote jobs available only for residents of their countries (*existent even before lockdowns), another problem with so-called and more common online opportunities is that the internet or social media is just proliferated with scammers. So be careful and have patience as this is going to take time in sifting; that hopefully, you still have something to eat while still searching. Meanwhile, those who would be ‘lucky’ enough to land a gig could still fall victim to very low payouts, else, ridiculous procedures. Thus, check out various sources.
  • Learn to survive on bare minimum. Let’s face it, times are dire. Thence, be prepared to even eat as little as one small piece of bread a meal if necessary. Forget pride and get out of the victim mentality. Such drastic change in lifestyle does not take away your dignity, it only amplifies your strength, resilience and resourcefulness. This is something you would not get from school or work experiences. And it is these kinds of difficult experiences that translates into wisdom that would put you above the rest – especially if you are a smart and conscientious leader.

As the saying goes, what does not kill you will only make you stronger.

Online Shopping 101: How Do You Buy from a Lazada Link?

Okay, a couple of days ago we talked of simple facts about online shopping and how does one go about it. Today, we would be delving into ‘how to’ buy from a link you see floating on your screen — like Lazada, a renown online ‘shopping mall’. So, stay with me.

Let’s say while you were updating your social media accounts you noticed an interesting item sold at Lazada, well, don’t hesitate..

CLICK THIS IMAGE to shop and take note of the delivery options to the right
After filling out the delivery options, check out its changes and follow the process below

JUST CLICK THE LINK

Because of the brief outline accompanying the link, you already have an idea of what the product is all about. But just an ‘idea’ is different from a full description, so just click the link and find out more about the product. Worry not, this stage is still free of charge!

But before we continue, let’s use a different item instead.

Say, the above is the item that appeared after clicking the link. It’s in fact similar to our first photo, I mean the structure. Except that here, the buyer didn’t immediately fill out the delivery options to the right.

Instead, after checking out the product info and its availability, the buyer then clicked ADD TO CART. And the screen below appeared.

CONFIRM SHOPPING CART

Now check the cart details. Click on how many of it do you want — or the quantity, that is. If you still want to buy other products then click ‘continue shopping’ (which is to the left); otherwise, if you are done shopping then click PROCEED TO CHECKOUT.

This is the screen that would appear after ‘proceed to checkout’ is clicked

KEY-IN YOUR EMAIL

An entity would not know how to get in touch with you if you don’t leave any contact details, right? So, keying in your email address on that blank bar would open up your end for notifications.

Still here, you got 2 options: (1) ‘continue without password’ and just sign in with your social media account, or (2) click ‘I already have an account’, choosing on this would require you to log in by entering your password which is actually much better if you plan to go online shopping not just once but every now and then — as Lazada would then use your ‘stored’ delivery info to speed up the process.

Provide shipping information to the left

PROVIDE DELIVERY INFO

Upon continuing, here’s when you provide info such as your shipping address and phone number, after all, how could they send it to you without a ‘drop-off’ information? Or how could they notify you if there’s no phone number? Yep, and especially useful for issues.

Just make sure you check out the ‘shipping fee’ because there could be some if you ordered ‘bulky’ items. Otherwise, ‘standard’ delivery is FREE. Now, if you’re done then click CONTINUE.

Choose your payment then review your order and delivery info at the right side

CHOOSE YOUR PAYMENT

An array of payment options would then appear on your screen after clicking ‘continue’. So, just click on which one you would prefer.

Now this is optional: If you have a ‘voucher’, you could then enter its ‘code’ and click ‘apply here’. Yes, it’s for discounts. If successful, the price would then be adjusted accordingly. But before proceeding, review your ‘order summary’ and ‘delivery information’. Correct? Then click on PLACE YOUR ORDER to finalize your purchase.

ORDER CONFIRMATION RECEIPT

After finalizing your purchase with ‘place your order’, you would then receive an order confirmation. By the way, take note of your ‘order number’ for future order tracking. This confirmation would also be sent to you via email and SMS. So, make sure you filled out your correct details. Read. Read. Read.

Simple Facts about Online Shopping

So, online shopping has become more and more popular around the world, eh — what with internet access to most everyone in the planet??! Still, many are either scared or overwhelmed by it; well, let’s then get a quick diagnosis on why such a feeling.

SCARY?

There’s actually a basis for this thought, I mean, being scared and stuff. For one, you’d be kinda paying online (unless they offer C.O.D. or cash on delivery) — like giving your credit card or account details! So it’s understandable. Then again, your peace of mind could come from ‘whom’ you are actually buying from.

And track record has something to do with this idea which especially includes ‘consumer experience’. Like, if the seller has an ‘inexcusable’ record of not being able to deliver on what they have promised then that’s a warning sign. See, legitimacy is more than just having ’em business papers — it’s first and foremost about the ‘experience’.

Anyhow, other revealing signs would also include the size of the company, otherwise, its years of existence. This would tell us if they are just a ‘fly-by-night’ establishment, or a company that would not run away with your money. Such companies have online security protection and you would just have to follow their procedures.

OVERWHELMING?

Now, speaking of ‘procedures’. One who is past the ‘scared’ stage might be in the ‘overwhelmed’ stage, you know. Like, since he is already aware of the seller’s legitimacy, he must then be eager to already purchase. Right?

Problem is.. Money. Ow, that’s a big one. Can’t be overwhelmed without money but depressed. Hehe.

Kidding aside, if money is not an issue then it must be technology. Perhaps the buyer has not tried ‘online shopping’ yet, and so, he’s overwhelmed on what to do — on how to do it without probably getting embarrassed, or making a mistake.

If that’s the case, here are his options: (1) Call or send a message to the seller for guidance. (2) If he wants independent action then do a search on the sellers’ online process. (3) Otherwise, carefully read what’s on the screen and especially take note of the delivery and payment procedures — if it suits him then he should follow ’em.

READY TO BUY?!

Once you are past the ‘overwhelmed stage’ — that only means, you already got an idea on how to shop online. Yes? Wow, this could be addictive. Hey, can you imagine the number of products available?? Thousands! And good quality at that! Besides, not only is online shopping convenient that you don’t need to leave your house, it’s also delivered at your doorstep!

Isn’t that cool?!! SHOP NOW!

Innovation Watch: pCell

Did you know that Artemis Networks has come up with a technological advancement that would make mobile data connectivity (like video streaming) run seamless and.. faster than it is today?

image
Steve Perlman

Well, yes.. Steve Perlman has developed what he calls pCell or “personal cell” technology. And this network equipment could actually draw a signal that is unique in itself for devices that connects to the transmitter, and thus, taking full advantage of the bandwidth.

See, one major problem with our connections (shared mobile bandwidth) today is that when there are so many users – congestion makes connectivity jam up. But with this technology, we could now experience faster and uninterrupted mobile data – even with a ton of users as these pWave radios are small enough to be placed just about anywhere. So.. is it goodbye dead spots as well?

image

Oh, just think of what Perlman told the Business Week, “…it’s like the wireless equivalent of fiber-optic cables. ”

Hmm…

At any rate, exciting as it may seem, the question would now be.. when would this pCell technology be available for the rest of the world, and “without technical problems” at that? Yes, it’d be set out in the U.S. before the year ends; but sadly, many countries (especially in their provinces) are just left too far behind.. even for as simple as the 3G.

App Review: Tinder dating site

With over 5 million downloads at Google Play, Tinder is among the hottest applications being downloaded today.

Tinder is actually a matchmaker of an application. And just like other dating sites, it mainly bases its search according to gender, age and location among others.

image

However, unlike other apps, Tinder is a bit more appealing with all those swiping as even athletes from the ongoing Sochi Winter Olympics uses the site to find dates, and especially last Valentines day.

Still, it was not all a “bed of roses” for its users as a flaw was recently discovered from the dating app. And what was it?

A user’s actual location could actually be pinpointed (by just using some high school math) when as we believe should be anonymous, right?

image

For one, this could be dangerous especially if one unknowingly encounters a “scheming” individual. The consequences.. oh, you could just imagine.

Sure, Tinder has promptly acted on it, but they better make sure that it’s really fixed and no other hacking would happen.

Gaming Review: Flappy Bird – R.I.P.(?)

It’s been several days now since the phenomenal Flappy Bird was removed from Apple and Google Play.. and what do you know?

image

The bird is still alive not just in millions of phones and tablets but in the heads of many as well.

Hmm… pretty amazing, huh? When you think about it, the game is just too simple to get addicted to yet how come many has even gone to extremes as a reaction to the pull out from Apple and Google store?

For one, you could have the game’s installer through Bluetooth, right? So why threaten or even buy mobiles with preinstalled Flappy Birds? Relax.

Well anyway, when one tries playing it.. clearly, a steady hand or finger is the key – what with a single missed tap and the game’s over?! And this is what, in fact,  makes it challenging. After 3 “game overs” or so, you just find yourself pushing harder to overcome those pipes. Oh?!wpid-FlappyBird.jpg

And so, despite the potential income for the Vietnamese game developer, we understand the decision of Nguyen Ha Dong to delete his creation.

Still, aren’t video games naturally addictive? It’s just a matter of appeal that the game has – graphics, challenges or what – that connects it with those hungry gamers.

For now, it’s game over for Flappy Bird.. and may you bring peace to your fans the world over.

YouTube Review: Squirrel hides nuts in a Bernese Mountain dog’s fur

Just a 40 second video earns the nod of over 6.5M viewers as this week’s most popular YouTube video – beating Game of Thrones by over a million views. So, what exactly is this all about?

Hmm… just all about a squirrel trying to hide his nuts in a dog’s fur – and so the title, Squirrel hides nuts in a Bernese Mountain dog’s fur by Shannon Apple. Look at it.. isn’t it cute? And healing, eh?!

This video, just like many others, once again proves that simple is beautiful. Remember our previous Youtube video review on Uncle Henry’s Christmas gift?

See? Simple joys bring a million views. Try it and capture hearts.

App Review: Whoscall

And the winner is… well, you know who. Who else but “Whoscall”! Whoscall?

whoscall3Whoscall is an application designed to determine the origin of calls and text messages regardless if the caller’s number is on your phone book or not. Also, Whoscall helps you block callers you do not want to talk to.

Oh, that’s nice. But wait, what is this “winner” thing all about?

Hmm… it’s all actually about last year’s winner for Google’s Best Application. LINE Corporation in partnership with developer Gogolook utilizes databases of over 600 million numbers taken from the Yellow Pages among others.

But then, good as it gets, there’s still much room for improvement.

One. It is said that the offline databases are only available in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the U.S.. This means many of those who would want to install this application would not be able to maximize its capability because of this limitation – besides, we can’t always be online, you know.

Two. Many have been complaining that Whoscall does not work with certain phone brands such as Lenovo. If this is the case, what’s the use of the application then?whoscall4

Three. One of its system requirements says that the “use of battery conservation apps may cause performance issues.” Well, then we won’t be able to take “conservation measures” if we use this application?! Some trade-in, eh?

Lastly, numbers in our phone book would not be “automatically” collected by LINE Whoscall service. Key word: automatically. This means, it would be stored – eventually. So, what about our conversations?

With all these privacy violations nowadays, should we just develop some kind of “Morse code” to be used within our contacts? Hopefully, things gets fixed before another round of problems ring our phones.
