TODAY: Top 10 Things in Cebu City

As the world turns, times change and so do trends. Still, not all ‘hot’ stuff is new — others have been around since civilization could remember that we sort of ignore them.

So in no particular order, here are the current ‘trends’ in Cebu City.

Zumba

With greater emphasis on health and beauty nowadays, Zumba has become a way of life — that one could normally see (and join for free) these workouts in malls, whether at the top floor or at the car park.

Lotto I Swertres

Games of chance sort of gives the masses some hope in trying times that it has brought about an unusual ‘brotherhood’ especially in swertres where numbers are shared to help each other out.

Regular Mall Bargains

With mall bargains and ‘ukay-ukay’ stores everywhere, locals are just not yet ready to embrace the convenience of online shopping.

Massage Kiosks

Saunas and spas have been feeling stiff competition from electronic massage chairs to massages offered by the blind that they have to do promos to stay relevant against these ‘on-the-go’ alternatives.

Fresh Avocado Juice

Haven’t really noticed this even last year (have you?) in the streets of Colon, so avocado juice is definitely one of those new hot stuffs out there — and could be a seasonal thing from now on. After all, it’s healthy and delicious — and affordable, too!

Ice Skating

There may not be snow in the Philippines but ever since locals have been introduced to ice skating, we have seen enthusiasts grow immensely. Would we see more Michael Martinez’ someday?

Short shorts

While ‘ukay-ukay’ has now been a fixture, here’s one clothing line that seems to get more and more fans from such stores — the short shorts — that it has become part of the new everyday attire.

Street food: Seafood

The famed ‘pongko pongko’ has recently expanded! Though this tasty seafood in BBQ sticks isn’t sold alongside puso (hanging rice), it’s still addicting. Haven’t you tried it?

Self-service car wash (above) | Coin-operated laundry (below)

We already know about the existence of self-service restaurants but self-service car washes and self-operating laundries are on the rise. Tho car washes are for those on the road, these laundry shops are especially good if you’re not so busy. And they’re pocket-friendly!

Skateboarding

Do not be surprised if you see more than just cars and motorbikes on the road these days, skateboarding has become increasingly popular among youngsters that it has hit the streets and has even been restricted in many schools.

Street Style: Are Ripped Jeans Starting to Fade?

If there’s one thing noticeable in celebrity street styling these days, it’s their pants. Ripped jeans are being worn lesser, or at least, lesser rips; while the emphasis has gone back to hems and pockets.

Some are bell-bottoms. Others just tight as in skinny jeans. While folding is also making a comeback. Well, that’s how fashion really is — a cycle. Thus, ‘pairing’ is the key, as always.

Bethenny Frankel in NYC

Grayish jeans with a folded hem and no belt for Beth. More than the shirt, it’s her jacket and boots that ‘carried the show’ for her.

Ali Larter in LA

Look at ’em pockets, nice! For Ali, it’s bell-bottoms and no belt as well. Again, the jacket played a role in our celebrity’s style. Cool!

Selena Gomez in Los Angeles

While Selena’s Gianvito Rossi sandals is just too chic to ignore, she simply looks great in her half-tucked tops that went well with her skinny jeans. Yes, for all and sundry, jeans are sexier with no belt — it only shows you don’t need anything to make your figure known.

Reese Witherspoon

Now, how ’bout dresses? Flowers are simply blooming, yes? Just one of ’em designs that has always been around — floral. And Reese is just one of those who wears ’em a lot more than other stars do.

Victoria Beckham in Paris

Victoria would always be Victoria. A fashion icon — that when she wears something, it must be the trend. Hey, long skirts are ‘in’!

My Home: 9 Kitchen Trends for 2016

We are into the third month of the year and now, got some kitchen confidentials to share — 9 Kitchen Trends for 2016 with the help of Houzz and the forecasts of interior designers Jane Lockhart and Gail Drury. What can we say? Well, just let you know as we go through them one by one, here goes..

Soft, muted color palettes
Soft, muted color palettes

One. Soft colors in the kitchen are certainly welcome. And it’s not all about ’em becoming or being the more popular tones. But like music, color which has a lot to do with ambiance inspires us to do well with our culinary artistry.

Smart spaces

Two. Smart devices. Smart appliances. Smart kitchen. Definitely, a space-saving kitchen is a must. And this is not just about packing in those high-tech appliances, but with all the preparation and cookin’ goin’ on — you need to be able to move around, you know.

An '80s reboot
An ’80s reboot

Three. What about the ’80s? Yeah, what about it?? As Lockhart says, “mirrored backsplashes, brass accessories and high-gloss surfaces aren’t dead but more elegant and refined this time around.” Indeed, simply a removal of the ‘plastic’ look.

Metal range hoods

Four. So, there will be more of the metal hoods this year — instead of the ‘wood mantle’ hoods — to go with other holdings like faucets and drawers. And why not, it’s got a different kind of appeal! Like, you’re coming from the dungeon of master chefs! Wow!

Integrated kitchen living spaces

Five. Ahhh, the need for integration is not simply about the kitchen feeling disconnected from the rest of the house, but it is more like having easier access to your ‘food bucket’ — and saving more space (even decors) for other purposes. Seriously.

A new kind of tradition

Six. Hmm… It’s all about evolving with time — and ‘space’. The ‘big’ basics are more emphasized, like the hood and islands while dangles would be lesser making the kitchen more down-to-earth. Yeah, let the artistry be more on the food! Hah!

Texture-on-texture contrast
Texture-on-texture contrast

Seven. One way to make the kitchen more lively lies in repositioning texture designs. Absolutely. Just like clothing, you can not just keep wearing the same old design where color is the only difference, see?! The kitchen has to feel alive, and not be a drag!

A nod to midcentury mod

Eight. Something that’s obviously true. The living room, or furnitures for that matter should have strong influence on the kind of kitchen we put up; otherwise, there goes the ‘disconnection’! What matters  here is having a functional kitchen — and making things simple not only helps bring the costs down but makes a statement!

Well-lit cabinetry

Nine. Then again, it’s in the ‘lighting’ where accentuation would be more present. That’s going to be like the hightlight of the kitchen — just do not overdo it! Subtle, in some ways, is always beautiful..
